We have had a couple of surprises this week in the hen house.
The first surprise was that Tubby has decided that the nest box should become his domain. I don’t know how that rooster fits through that hole. His shoulders are wider than the opening. When you lift the lid, all you see is white feathers! Although, Cassidy will kick him out when it is time to lay eggs (which leads to another surprise.)
So eggciting (pun intended)! Cassidy has finally started to lay eggs. Here is the bounty she has given me so far this week. (Still no eggs from Sundance.)
The biggest surprise we have had is that, apparently, Butch is really a rooster! Tubby was suppose to be the only rooster, but Butch had other plans. Now we get serenaded by the crow of Butch. He isn’t as shy, so it was easy to record him. Notice that he is doing an imitation of Karate Kid while crowing.
Well, hopefully, this is all the surprises we will be getting in the coop. (Unless, of course, Sundance starts crowing!
Ohhhh! Enjoy those eggs! A friend of mine from medical school raises chickens and those eggs are heavenly. I wonder what’s in store for Tubby and Butch…a showdown of some sort?
They were raised together since birth and seem to get along so far. I guess Butch knows the pecking order because Tubby still rules the roost. lol
I love it when you write about the hen house. 🙂
Thanks Angie! They keep me entertained, too.
We raised meat birds (175 per year) and laying hesns for 20 years, till 2 years ago when we moved. I NEED another outbuilding for hens. I miss them
I really love our chickens! I can’t imagine not having them now.
Such big beautiful eggs. Must be really nice to be able to go out and gather fresh eggs in the morning. And such adorable hens/roosters too. 🙂
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
Congrats on the eggs. Home grown eggs are so nice as you know exactly how the chickens are treated and what they have been eating.
Thank you! Also, home grown usually tastes better.
How wonderful when a great plan comes off like this – fresh eggs are an incredible by-product of all that effort! Funny that you have a surprise ‘he’ – a bit of gender debate in a chicken coop might add to the drama! 😀
So far, not so much drama. We shall see if that continues. Hopefully, not too many feathers will get ruffled.
Yes, so eggciting about Cassidy! 🙂 Too funny about Tubby, he is something! Bet it was a surprise that Butch is really a rooster, good strong crowing. I played that video and my dog looked around…LOL!
It was quite a surprise and boy he sure can crow. He will go for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, several times a morning!
