Did you know that Devils Tower was one of the filming locations for Close Encounters of the Third Kind?
(Theatrical Release Poster)
The movie was released in November of 1977 and was directed by Steven Spielberg. In December, 2007, Close Encounters was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for the preservation in the National Film Registry. It had eight Oscar nominations and one win for Best Cinematography.
“The Third Kind” refers to physical contact with Extraterrestrials. After the movie was released, tourism to Devils Tower increased.
“What the hell is going on around here? Who the hell are you people?” – Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss)
This actually looks really beautiful. Would love to go and visit it myself.
Cool photo and great history on the site. I remember the movie and how Devil’s Tower was depicted in the story. It does look amazing.
